August '24. The Dickens Mosaics in St. Peter's get a makeover.

Town Team put out an appeal for help with the Turner and Dickens Mosaics in July 2024.

The Turner and Dickens Mosaics were designed and installed in 2009 to signal the start and finish of the 4-mile Turner and Dickens or ‘T&D’ walk.

This lovely walk follows an ancient footpath between St Peter’s and St John’s churches in Margate and Broadstairs and is signposted in both directions.

The colourful panels that are featured at both ends of the walk and celebrate both artists were created by Broadstairs’ own world-renowned Mosaic artist Martin Cheek. He worked with local children and other residents to design, make and install them.

The Dickens mosaics feature an assortment of his well-known characters and are in St. Peter’s village, opposite the Four Candles Ale House. The Turner mosaics featuring assorted landscapes are installed on Holy Trinity St. John’s Primary school in Margate.

Mosaics suffer, the elements are not always kind, and there is no one focused on, or a budget provision for their upkeep. Broadstairs Town Team decided to sort of ‘adopt’ them and we thought it was about time we gave the Dickens mosaics some more TLC.

We managed to raise a small amount of funding  for Martin's materials thanks to a donation from a previous Town Councillor’s community budget and worked previously with Martin and members of our community to repair them and refurbish the area in 2016.

Given they are now 15 years old, Town Team invited local volunteers to help to give them some much needed attention.

Martin repaired the actual mosaics with a fellow artist, and  designed and installed a new, 2024 version.

We had a wonderful turn out of enthusiastic volunteers who tidied up the green areas, cut back overhanging trees, litterpicked, cleaned weeded and swept the concrete surrounding areas.

Just a couple of hours of donated time from a few kind people enabled us to restore them to their former glory again for everyone to enjoy. Great

Thanks to our Friends at The Albion Inn for donating drinks and keeping us hydrated - it was a very hot day

During and after all their hard work :
